News International considers revamp of tabloid papers

LONDON - The Sun could get a fresh look as editor Rebekah Wade instigates a reorganisation of the title's production department, following last week's appointment of Simon Cosyns as group art director.

Wade, who took up the role of editor in January, is understood to be putting in place a number of changes in the way the editorial office is run, and she is also looking at whether the paper's image needs updating.

Cosyns has worked as group associated editor at The Daily and Sunday Mirror for eight years. Before that, he worked on The Sun for seven years. He is currently on gardening leave while the two publishers come to an agreement over his 18-month contract.

He has been hired to a new role at News International as group art director across The Sun and Wade's old paper, the News of the World. It is thought that once a review of The Sun has taken place, the News of the World could be next.

Wade still has a few more appointments to make before her team on The Sun is complete. She has already hired Victoria Newton from the Daily Mail to edit the Bizarre column, and it is understood that Newton's predecessor Dominic Mohan is to write a weekly column for the paper.

There are also thought to be plans to cut back on staff by changing the role of sub-editors to include page layout and production.

Both titles are market leaders in their sectors. The Sun had a circulation of 3,525,869 including bulk circulation in April, up 0.13% on March, while the News of the World had 3,886,800, up 0.98% on the previous month.
