News Group Newspapers ad chief Ian Clark has finalised a major ad sales shake up that recognises the importance of persuading TV advertisers to switch to press.
Clark's first move was to select sales controller David Emin, a 13-year servant of News Group, as his deputy ad director. 'David will keep tight control on the day-to-day running of operations, allowing me to develop our sell. He will also help me evolve our sales strategy and disseminate it to the troops.'
Significantly, Clark has also split the former business development department into two units. Stef Clarke will be in charge of the first as head of client marketing. His focus will be on marketing News Group brands to clients and agencies. 'Stef will focus on several key areas,' said Clark.
'He will be looking to pull in lapsed advertisers and clients who have tended to focus their budgets on TV.'
The second new unit is strategic sales. It will be headed by David Roddick, who has been promoted from ad manager of NGN retail.
Roddick's group will be expected to maximise revenue from all non-traditional sources. 'They will be looking at solutions like pull-outs, sponsorship and advertorials,' said Clark.
Roddick's group will also oversee new-media sales, previously handled by online sales house Real Media. Although Real Media will continue to work on the account, Clark commented that the creation of an inhouse online sales team 'shows News Group's commitment to its online properties'.
Jason Mawer, formerly a sales executive on News Group's magazine division, has been promoted to group head of the new-media team. He will be assisted by sales executives Sean Costa and Andy Robins, who have moved across from magazines and inserts respectively.
The shake-up also sees Yvon Nolle, formerly group head on newspapers, take Roddick's old role as ad manager of NGN retail. Guy Gibbs, previously group head on magazines, steps into Nolle's shoes, while sales executive Neil Finer is promoted to magazines group head.
'The fact we are able to make so many internal appointments shows the degree of talent within the News Group team,' said Clark.
