Agambar is returning to News Group, where he used to be the head of marketing at The Sun, after two years at Express Newspapers as the group marketing director.
News Group, which spends £23 million on advertising for The Sun and News of the World through TBWA\London, parted company with its previous marketing director Belinda Furneaux-Harris in April. She left after just nine months in the job amid reports of differences over marketing strategy with News Group's management.
Agambar is credited with helping to increase the Daily Star's circulation during his time at Express Newspapers. He comes from a media agency background, having also worked at News Group's media agency, Carat, as a broadcast director.
Camilla Rhodes, the News Group Newspapers managing director, said: "I am very pleased to announce that Roland will be returning to News Group Newspapers.
"He has an extensive knowledge of the tabloid market and, moreover, a good understanding of our titles. I am sure that his experience in newspaper marketing will be an excellent addition to our existing team."
News Group is facing problems with the circulations of two of its titles.
September sales figures show The Sun's circulation was down 5 per cent to 3,336,322, while sales of News of the World were down 1 per cent to 3,889,315.
