Craik Jones Watson Mitchell Voelkel, Kitcatt Nohr Alexander Shaw and Harrison Troughton Wunderman topped the nominations list, while OgilvyOne Worldwide was shortlisted 10 times.
The awards, which celebrate their 25th anniversary this year, were judged by some 200 industry experts who looked at hundreds of entries across 29 categories.
Peter Vicary-Smith, the chair of the judges and chief executive of consumer group Which?, said he saw an improved standard of entries compared to previous years.
"When I have been judging before, there have been some good things but, by and large, it has been pretty clear early on what things have ticked all three boxes - the strategy, the creativity and the results," he noted.
"This year there were not many entries that didn't tick those boxes in spades. That makes judging harder, but it means people are producing good work, which is great for the industry."
This year the DMA has also created a special one-off award to support NABS, the marketing industry charity, with everyone attending the awards eligible to enter for 拢5.
Those entering will be asked to fill a brief on their placemats that will then be judged and awarded on the night.
