News Corp denies interest in Optus

LONDON - News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch has refuted claims that he is interested in buying Optus, the cable business of Australia's Cable & Wireless.

Murdoch told a press conference in Hong Kong via videolink from New York that he believed the business to be "very sick, badly run and badly designed".

Murdoch added that BSkyB is forecast to increase the amount of revenue it derives from each customer by 20%. ARPU is expected to jump from £300 in 2001 to £360 in 2003. It will climb to £400 in 2005.

The increase will be achieved through price increases, commission income from subscribers and e-commerce.
