This Is London, the Evening Standard’s online city guide, has
scooped the top award at the 1998 Yell UK Web Awards, sponsored by
Yellow Pages.
This Is London (www.thisislondon.co.uk) was named site of the year, and
best online publication, at the ceremony held at BAFTA last week.
Mathmos, the Covent Garden shop selling Lava lamps, won best commercial
web site. The judges agreed that the site was well executed, while its
60s feel captured the product’s brand values.
Most innovative web site went to CyberTranscriber
(www.speechmachines.com).
The online transcription service allows users to phone a free number and
dictate a memo or report, which is converted to text and e-mailed
back.
The web users’ choice, sponsored by Microsoft FrontPage, went to The
Mighty Reds, Liverpool Football Club’s web site,
(www.anfield.merseyworld.com).
This was the only award not decided by the judging panel.
Other winners included: RSPCA Online for best non-commercial web site;
Circlemakers, a site about crop circles, for best personal site;
Aloud.com for best entertainment site; and Syzygy for best web design
agency.
