NEW MEDIA: COI chooses design net for RAF career site task

COI Communications is overhauling its RAF recruitment web site and has appointed new media house design net to handle the project.

Due to go live in mid-February, the site aims to portray the wide range of careers available in the RAF, tying in with a recent above-the-line campaign through J Walter Thompson.

The new site will be interactive, with a host of games and tasks designed to test potential recruits' skills and stressing the importance of teamwork.

The business will be the web agency's first COI work since it won a place on the roster just before Christmas.

It scooped the business earlier this month following a three-way pitch against two undisclosed agencies. The London-based agency has previously developed recruitment-related web activity for Harvey Nash and The Graduate Recruitment site.

Activity kicks off with three online games based around low-level flying, search and rescue and airfield defence. Additional games will be added each month to boost repeat visits and maintain interest.

The RAF has a history of using the web as a recruitment medium, with previous sites developed by Deepend and Intrasolve/JWT Interactive. The Army has also traditionally used the web as a key part of its recruitment campaigns. In November, COI Communications hired eMC Saatchi to develop the next phase of its police recruitment site.

The RAF project is being overseen by Kevin Ryan, creative manager at COI Communications. The online budget is understood to be a five-figure sum. Viral marketing will support the relaunch and is expected to be handled by a separate online agency.

The current RAF careers site can be found at www.rafcareers.co.uk.
