New Dot London internet domain snapped up by venues

Venues around the capital have been among the first businesses to sign up for the new Dot London domain, which provides an alternative to the .com or .co.uk web addresses.

London businesses will be given application priority.

Exhibition space ExCel London, the Edwardian Group’s Scoff & Banter restaurants and event planning website Convention Bureau are among the list of businesses to receive the name after registering for the ‘pioneer’ stage of the programme.

Over 50,000 websites have expressed interest in the domain, with Londoners and London businesses receiving application priority for the first three months. London & Partners, who launched the concept, say Dot London will provide venues with a website address that instantly identifies them with the city.

The domain was secured by the company and the Mayor of London in a deal with internet company ICANN.

David Pegler, chief executive of ExCel London, said: "London is one of the world’s leading destinations for event organisers. Last year we welcomed over 3.6 million visitors to ExCeL London, of which 900,000 were international business tourists.

"A .london internet address will magnify our global reach and support us in bringing world class events to London from the rest of the UK and abroad," he explained.
