Singapore’s National Council on Problem Gambling was hoist by its own petard when its World Cup ad went viral for all the wrong reasons. The spot featured a boy saying he hopes Germany wins because his dad bet his life savings on the team. All very touching but, unfortunately, the ad aired at half-time during the semi-final between Germany and Brazil – when Germany were leading 5-0. Naturally, every joker in Singapore took to the web to make comments about the kid’s future suddenly looking a lot brighter, or asking NCPG for betting tips. That’s the fickle nature of gambling. You can’t even count on it to bring ruin when you need it to.
