NBC expects 15% rise in earnings

NEW YORK - Shaking off industry-wide gloom over the delay of the advertising recovery, NBC, the US's number one TV network, has said it expects pre-tax earnings to rise by 15% this year, to $1.6bn (£1.05bn).

According to NBC, growth in local ad sales, driven by ratings winners including 'Friends', 'Frasier' and 'ER', are behind the revenue rises. Executives at the TV network reported the forecast in a presentation to analysts.

Reports say that the weak spot for NBC is likely to be cable television, where revenues are predicted to be flat in the worst ad sales market for 20 years.

Shares in NBC's parent company, General Electric, rose this morning by 1.08% or $0.32, to trade at $29.82.

Earlier this year, NBC dropped the BBC quiz show 'The Weakest Link' from its primetime autumn line-up. The gameshow, which will return to NBC for a summer run, was omitted from the key autumn schedule, although NBC said that the show might make a comeback to US primetime in 2003.
