Baker will take up her new role on July 5, in a move that marks her first return to magazine editorship since she quit Company, which is also owned by NatMags, last December to concentrate on writing her first novel 'Fashion Victim'.
She joins as NatMags plans to launch a major advertising push for what is widely regarded as its flagship title. The publishing group, which has been working with Rise Communications to develop a brand strategy, is currently seeking its first ad agency in 32 years to market the brand to younger consumers.
Joan Adcock, Cosmopolitan's group publishing director, said: "Competition for the role of editor was extremely tough but Sam's insight into women's lives and understanding of Cosmopolitan cemented our decision. We are planning a significant investment in the brand and Sam will be working closely with myself and the team to make the coming months some of the most exciting in Cosmo's history.
During her five-year stint as editor of Company, the magazine was the fastest-growing women's magazine in 2002 and she also oversaw its revamp last year when it shrunk from British A4 to American A4 size.
"I have been a huge fan of Cosmopolitan since I was a student, when my flatmates and I used to take it in turns to buy it each month. This is quite simply a dream come true," Baker said.
Her previous roles have included editing Minx and J-17, and she is also a former deputy editor of New Woman.
Candy left in controversial circumstances, departing while on maternity leave and igniting a war of words betweeen NatMags and Elle publisher Hachette Filipacchi UK.
