From May, Nationwide customers using a Visa card will be passed on an additional charge of 0.84% of the value of any purchase made abroad. The fee will increase to 1% from 1 July.

Online consumer advice portal Which? has criticised the decision as anti-consumer. ‘Nationwide's decision to start charging customers fees for most purchases outside Europe is incredibly disappointing,' said Which? credit card expert Martyn Saville.

Nationwide recently appointed former Abbey executive Chris Rhodes as its of group product and marketing director. The financial services brand is yet replace former head of brand strategy Peter Gandolfi, who departed late last year.
