The activation will feature seaside smells, sounds, sights and tastes and aims to transport city-dwellers to the coast.
Aromas of salty sea air, seaweed, caves and rock pools will be released throughout the installation, which will be complemented by interior lighting and the sounds of waves and seagulls. The experience will be hosed in a giant shell exterior structure.
Guests will be able to share what they love about the coast via an interactive TV, provided by Panasonic. The tech brand is also giving the Shellsphere’s visitors a chance to win a camera.
Gwen Potter, the National Trust’s wildlife and countryside ranger, said: "The UK coastline is a magical place and can offer such a diverse range of experiences. We’re hoping the Shellsphere will trigger people’s love of the coast and encourage them to explore the great UK coastline this summer and beyond."
The installation will begin its tour of the UK in London on 19 August. Its last stop will be Belfast’s City Hall Ground on 31 August.
The Shellsphere will visit:
- London, South Bank Observation Point – 19 August
- Cardiff, Queen Street and Churchill Way – 21 August
- Bristol, Central Promenade – 22 August
- Birmingham, Victoria Square – 24 August
- Leeds, Briggate – 26 August
