National Trust to charge for plastic bags

The decision is part of a drive by the organisaion to be more environmentally friendly in its UK shops and restaurants. It claims additional income will go directly to conservation work and research.

In an effort to encourage its 3.5 million members to re-use bags, the National Trust will reduce the price of its jute carrier bag from £2.50 to £1.50 until 2 July 2008. The Trust is also introducing eco-packaging for its products, such as starch alternatives to cellophane and biodegradable bubble-wrap.

The 5p plastic carrier bag charge comes into effect on Thursday 1 May.
