National Geographic to launch Sky HDTV channel

National Geographic has created a dedicated channel with new High Definition TV capability to run on Sky’s new television service in early 2006.

National Geographic to launch Sky HDTV channel

National Geographic HD will be the first channel from a third party broadcaster to be added to Sky's HD channel line-up of six wholly-owned channels.

The channel will show factual programming produced in the UK and internationally, covering natural history, wildlife, science and world exploration.

Programmes will include Oceans of Glass, Earth Shock: Volcano and Megastructures.

Brian Sullivan, Sky's director customer products and services, said: "The clarity and vibrancy of HD is a perfect match for a National Geographic channel.

"Watching wildlife programmes in HD will transport you around the world and take you up close to some of nature's most amazing creatures in more detail than ever before."

The other HD channels will be Artsworld, one Sky Sports channel, Sky One, a Sky Box Office channel and two Sky Movies channels.
