The products will be sold in Asda and Sainsbury's from this month. Peri-Peri Ketchup is also being trialled in its restaurants after Nando's found customers were making ketchup spicier by adding peri-peri sauce.
The company believes its grocery range -- which includes marinades, dressings and cook-in sauces -- will drive trial of its restaurants. It estimates that 70% of people who buy Nando's groceries have never been in one of its 88 outlets.
Peri-Peri BBQ Sauce is also designed to capitalise on the popularity of barbecue sauces, which represent the fastest-growing category in the table sauce market.
The company plans further expansion of its range of Peri-Peri grocery products and intends to move into areas other than sauces.
Packaging for the ketchup and barbecue sauce was designed by South African brand consultancy Cross Colours. A 265ml bottle of Peri-Peri Ketchup will retail at £1.29, while BBQ Sauce will be priced £1.49.
Nando's will promote the products through point-of-purchase activity and a public relations campaign designed to generate sales through word of mouth.
According to ACNielsen, Nando's is the market leader in the bastes and marinades category, with a 20.9% value share. It also has a 7.2% share of the thin sauces sector, behind Encona and Tabasco.
