Murdoch matches Desmond with tabloid cover price rise

The Sun, News International's flagship tabloid, has upped its cover price across the country to counter price hikes by the Richard Desmond rival, the Daily Star.

The Sun this week lifted its weekday cover price from 20p to 25p in the London TV region. The tabloid had previously been discounted from 30p to 20p in the region.

The Rupert and James Murdoch-led News International has also upped the cover price of the weekday issue of The Sun from 25p to 30p in the Granada, Yorkshire and Tyne Tees TV regions.

, the circulation of The Sun – the biggest- selling newspaper in the country – was 2,898,113 in November last year, down 2.04% on the year.

The Daily Star registered a circulation of 756,686 n the same period, down 8.11% on the year.

The new cover price of The Sun in London matches the 20p to 25p price hike of Richard Desmond's the Daily Star, which upped its cover price on January 10.

Desmond has also upped the cover price of the Daily Star in Granada, Yorkshire and Tyne Tees from 25p to 30p.

Both the Daily Star and The Sun trade at a significant discount to the Daily Mirror, which is priced at 45p.
