Murdoch Jnr resigns from key News Corp role

Lachlan Murdoch, News Corp deputy chief operating officer and heir apparent to his father鈥檚 empire, has resigned from his job in the US.

The surprise departure comes just a month after the eldest son of chairman and chief executive of News Corp, Rupert Murdoch, won a Cannes Lion for Media Person of the Year.

News Corp said Lachlan Murdoch would step down from his role as publisher of the New York Post at the end of August but would stay on the media giant鈥檚 board of directors as an adviser.

Rupert Murdoch is said to have been 鈥減articularly saddened鈥 by the exit of his son from the job but thanked him for his 鈥渢errific contribution鈥 on the company鈥檚 fortunes, with the New York Post reporting record profits and a circulation high under his stewarship.

Lachlan Murdoch said he looked forward to continuing his involvement with the company in a different role, but added: 鈥淚 look forward to returning home to Australia with my wife, Sarah, and son, Kalan, in the very near future.

鈥淚 would like especially to thank my father for all he has taught me in business and in life. It is now time for me to apply those lessons to the next phase of my career.鈥

The exit of Lachlan Murdoch from a key operating role in News Corp is expected to put younger brother James Murdoch, currently chief executive of BSkyB in the UK, into the spotlight as a successor to his father.

However Rupert Murdoch said: 鈥淚 am grateful that I will continue to have the benefit of Lachlan鈥檚 counsel and wisdom in his continued role on the company鈥檚 board.鈥
