Lachlan Murdoch is due to stand down from his position as chairman of Fox Television Stations, which includes Twentieth Century Television, later this month when he returns to Australia.
When Lachlan announced his departure it was alleged that he was unhappy that his control of the Fox TV station group was undermined due to the close relationship between the group's CEO Jack Abernethy and Ailes, who has been described as a "close confidant" of Rupert Murdoch.
He has already relinquished his post as publisher of The New York Post, a position that his father has taken on.
News Corp said that Abernethy, the Fox TV CEO, would report to Ailes, who will in turn report to News Corp's chairman and CEO, Murdoch, and the company's president and chief operating officer, Peter Chernin.
The 65-year-old Ailes, who will control Fox TV's 35 TV stations, was hired by Murdoch 1996 to start Fox News.
During his long career, Ailes has been a media adviser to former US presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George Bush senior.
During his career he also worked as a TV producer on shows including 'Steve Allen's Laugh-Back'.
"Roger is the perfect executive to oversee News Corp's single most profitable business. He has the unqualified respect, trust and admiration of Rupert and myself," Chernin said.
