Murdoch-backed consortium to bid for ITV news

LONDON - The Independent Television Commission has given the all-clear for a consortium backed by Rupert Murdoch to compete for the ITN held contract to supply news programming to ITV.

The Channel Three News consortium is 20% owned by British Sky Broadcasting, which in turn is 37% owned by Murdoch's News Corporation. Other shareholders in Channel Three News are Bloomberg, Ulster Television, CBS News and Chrysalis.

Experts believe that while the consortium is unlikely to outbid ITN, the competition could force down the price that ITV has to pay for news. This is the first time that a rival bidder has emerged for the contract, which is due for renewal at the end of this year.
