The awards will take place in a purpose-built tented structure at Rome's famous Tor Di Valle, MTV revealed. The awards return to Italy for the first time since 1998's Milan event.
The news was announced yesterday by Brent Hansen, president and chief executive, MTV Networks Europe, alongside Antonio Campo Dall'Orto, the managing director of MTV Networks Italia.
Replay sponsors the awards as part of a two-year partnership whilst L'Oreal sponsors the show for the first time this year, also as part of a two year deal. Further sponsors are yet to be announced.
The MTV Europe Music Awards were created in 1994 to celebrate music and pop culture from a European point of view.
Last year, the show was staged in Edinburgh and hosted by Christina Aguilera who kicked up a storm at the US awards when she and Britney Spears kissed Madonna on stage during a rendition of Madonna's 'Like a Virgin'. Other cities have included Barcelona, Frankfurt, Stockholm, Dublin, Milan, Rotterdam, London, Paris and Berlin.
MTV is yet to announce its presenters and performers for this year's ceremony.
