'Breaking Point' will take viewers behind the scenes following A&R executives at Island Records as they search for the new Darkness or The Libertines.
The show will focuses on the real-time, real-life ups and downs of being in a band, from the A&R man walking out of a gig after just three songs to sibling rivalry that sees a band member being sacked by his own brother.
Other moments will include headline tours being cancelled because the lead singer's voice gives out and viewers catching would-be rock stars in the hum drum of their live their day-to-day lives, which for one drummer is working in a theme park dressed as a dead rat.
The series will see Island's A&R team take in acts ranging from an Irish all-girl rock band to a Norwegian skate-punk outfit and an American rock group, as they narrow down a shortlist of bands with the all-important X factor.
MTV is billing 'Breaking Point' as the real music alternative to the TV talent contests that, with the likes of ITV1's 'Pop Idol' and the BBC's 'Fame Academy', have become a staple of the schedules.
Chris Sice, vice-president of development at MTV UK and Ireland, said: "'Breaking Point' is the antidote to the primetime talent contests that have dominated schedules over the past few years. It's an eye-opener for anyone who ever entertained dreams of rock stardom and an entertaining look at the characters behind the hit records."
The series will follow the successful acts from all the way through their recording sessions, video shoots, first brushes with the media all the way through to the release of the first single.
However, with something of a nod to 'Fame Academy', on hand will be leading industry figures ranging from established musicians and recording artists to music magazine editors and record label executives, who will offer their insights into the music industry.
'Breaking Point' will hit screens on Mondays to Wednesdays on MTV, starting from May 17 at 9pm, and is being produced by Money Productions.
