MPs press Department for Culture on local TV for Freeview

LONDON - More than 120 MPs are pressing the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to introduce a local public-service TV channel on Freeview after digital switchover.

The MPs have backed an early day motion put forward on February 21 by Ian Stewart, chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on community media.

Public support for the introduction of local television to Freeview has already been demonstrated by Ofcom research published in November. The was the second most popular in a list of six services that could be introduced using capacity available after digital switchover.

One local TV plan has been put forward by United for Local Television, an umbrella group representing community TV operators and voluntary sector organisations. Members include, Community Media Association, York TV and Norwich TV.

It is proposing a local channel, named Channel 6, to offer news, programming, networked public service content and advertising.

Jacquie Devereux, a spokesperson for United for Local Television, said: "We believe that no UK citizen should be denied access to local news and information on television. This is even more vital now that ITV is reducing its non-news regional programming."
