LONDON - The Digital Radio Development Bureau has hired a new chief executive, Tony Moretta, at the same time as bringing several new radio companies to its board.

Moretta, who will start in June, joins from National Grid Wireless, where he was the general manager of the transmission company's broadcast unit. He has also been a director of Freeview for the past three years.

Since GCap departed the DRDB board following its announcement in Feburary of plans to exit digital radio, the board has expanded to include Arqiva, Channel 4, Global Radio, GMG Radio, UBC and UTV. Original members, the BBC, Digital One and Bauer Radio, remain on the DRDB board. The expansion of members now means that all major radio broadcasters, public and commercial, sit on the board.

Moretta believes the DRDB's expansion bodes well for the future of digital radio.
He said: "I wouldn't have taken the role if I didn't believe all shareholders were fully behind DAB. Sometimes an industry needs events, such as the GCap announcement, to refresh itself and give clarity to situations."

Among his priorities as DRDB chief, Moretta plans to develop retailers' support of DAB. He added: "We need to develop the consumer proposition and give them more information about what content they will benefit from, as they are buying a DAB set."

Moretta replaces Ian Dickens, who left the post last November.
