Leaked Rajar figures for January show Virgin Radio and Jazz FM both
making leaps in their weekly audience reach.
Listeners to Virgin FM in London rose from 876,000 each week during the
last three months of 1997 to more than 1.2 million, an increase of 37
per cent. Nationally, the station’s reach increased from 3.3 million to
4.7 million.
Jazz FM in London, which in January kicked off a marketing push with
48-sheet posters depicting a chameleon, has increased its reach from
437,000 to 650,000, a rise of 48 per cent.
The news is not so good for Xfm, as the number of listeners in London
slumped to 194,000 from 234,000 in the last quarter of 1997.
The biggest drop in London, however, was for Kiss FM. Its fourth-quarter
weekly reach of 951,000 fell to 837,000.
The BBC increased its reach across the board, with Radios 4 and 5
performing best.
