According to a statement, Molle is leaving to 'pursue fresh challenges'.

Molle was responsible for introducing the 'Should've Gone To Specsavers' line and was behind the TV commercial featuring Stephen Hawking being launched into outer space.

Richard Holmes, a former marketing director and director of healthcare at Boots the Chemist, is replacing Molee. Holmes, spent 12 years in marketing at Unilever before joining Boots, where he held a series of board-level roles in healthcare, marketing and commercial.

Molle said: 'I am extremely sad to be leaving Specsavers as my time with the group has been exciting and challenging. However, I feel that I have achieved all that I set out to do when I joined the company and am now looking forward to new challenges in the future, probably in a non-executive role.'

Specsavers has more than 830 stores throughout the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Spain. It is currently expanding its business into other health areas and has nearly 100 stores providing hearing services in the UK, which it plans to double this year.

The group has more than a 30% share of the optical market in the UK and Republic of Ireland and it had an annual turnover of £879m for the financial year 2006/7.
