Gilbert joined Mojo in 1998 and was appointed editor in 2001. He is leaving to go freelance and to spend more time with his wife and son. He will continue to write for Mojo on a freelance basis.
According to Gilbert: "Mojo has been my life over the last five years, and the idea that I'm leaving our little family brings a tear to my eye and a huge lump to my throat. However, as George [Harrison] said, all things pass. There are wives and children (one of each) who need seeing more often, and lots of writing that needs to be done. So a sad farewell. I'll miss you all terribly."
Gilbert has overseen a steady rise in Mojo's circulation while in the editor's chair. In August 2001, the magazine's ABC circulation was 87,120. In the latest set of ABCs for the July to December 2002 period, Mojo had a circulation of 100,418, a period-on-period rise of 0.3% and a yearly increase of 3.7%.
Mojo editor-in-chief Paul Trynka will oversee the running of the magazine until a new editor is appointed.
"Apart from presiding over several consecutive ABC rises as editor, [Pat] has overseen many crucial changes to Mojo over the last five years, and we will all miss his unflappable humour, great writing, good judgement and sheer hard work," Trynka said.
