'Millionaire' company Celador loses £1m in court battle

LONDON – Celador, the producer of ITV quiz show 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?', must pay £1m in damages to an Indonesian TV company after breaking its contract and licensing the show to another producer.

Distribution arm Celador International cancelled its licence with Indonesian producer Arief, worth £79,000 a year, and signed a new deal with Australian company Becker, worth considerably more at £370,000.

The deal made Celador an extra £500,000 a year but Arief lost out on a 20-year licensing deal believed to be worth around £23m.

It took Celador to the High Court on May 12 for £23m in damages. The court ruled in favour of Arief after a 16-day trial.

Celador will now have to pay $1.75m (£960,000) plus legal costs. The full damages will be decided upon in April.

Celador described the $23m damages claim as "extravagant" but was not available to comment further.
