Microsoft pulls directors from Telewest

LONDON - Microsoft has withdrawn its three non-executive directors from the board of Telewest as it reconsiders its 23.6% stake in the cable company.

Microsoft told Telewest this morning that Henry Vigil, Salman Ullah and Dennis Durkin will step down from the board as of today.

The news comes amid fresh speculation that Telewest's other major shareholder, Liberty Media chairman and US cable tycoon John Malone, is set to make a bid for the cable company, which is burdened with more than 拢5bn of debt.

Microsoft said in a statement: "At present, we believe that we will be in a better position to manage our relationship with, and investment in, Telewest without board representation.

"Microsoft expects to continue to evaluate Telewest on an ongoing basis and, in that regard, will continue to consider, among other things, purchasing or selling Telewest securities or engaging in possible strategic transactions involving Telewest. Microsoft has no current plan regarding any such transactions, but reserves the right to change its plans at any time."
