The micro-museum previews tonight and will be open to the public from tomorrow (23 September) until the 30 November. Curated by Bompas & Parr in a collaboration with super/collider, the Micro Museum of Sleep offers guests the chance to look through peep-holes into four vitrines containing a variety of creative, gallery-style outputs that each represent sleep and dreaming in some way.

The surreal and otherworldy nature of sleep – a period where we mentally enter a personal universe for up to eight hours per day – is the focus of a diorama representing the Mesopotamian God of Dreams created by Olivia Bargman. The diorama is paired with an animation by video artist Alice Dunseath with an abstract interpretation of the sights and sounds experienced whilst in a restful dream-like state.

A thought-provoking vision of future sleep imagines what sleep would be like in zero gravity with astronomer Dr Marek Kukula, and the final video examines the physiology of sleep, as told by neuroscientist Dr Simon Jones, discussing the many theories about how the brain behaves during nocturnal hours.

The micro museum marks the opening of citizen M Tower of London, its second addition to London offering 370 rooms overlooking the Thames.

Harry Parr, partner of Bompas & Parr, said: "Sleep is such an enigmatic and mysterious concept, and modern life seems to divide people into those who can’t get to sleep, those who struggle to stay asleep and those who are blissfully comatose as soon as their heads hit the pillow. Yet for all that ubiquity of experience, we collectively understand little about our physiological need for sleep, what really happens after lights out."

Robin Chadha, COO at citizenM said: "A good night’s sleep is at the top of our wish list when we are staying away from home and we pride ourselves on offering all our citizens a luxurious yet affordable way to sleep. We are excited to be working with Bompas and Parr to explore exactly what happens when we turn out the lights and close our eyes; I think we can promise some surprises are in store."
