Michael J Fox spins again backing Kerry in stem cell ad

NEW YORK - Michael J Fox, the 'Spin City' and 'Back To The Future' who retired from acting after revealing he has Parkinson's disease, has come out to back John Kerry and made an ad supporting the Democratic Presidential candidate's stance on stem cell research.

Fox has made an ad saying he supports US Presidential candidate John Kerry's stance on stem cell research.

The 30-second ad was filmed on Monday after a meeting in which Senator Kerry and Fox called for a commitment to be made to stem cell research. In the spot, Fox says that stem cell research could be used to treat diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and diabetes.

He criticises the limits that President George W Bush has put on stem cell research.

In the ad, he says: "George Bush says we can wait. I say lives are at stake and it's time for leadership. That's why I support John Kerry for President."

Fox was starring as a mayor's press secretary in the comedy 'Spin City' when he revealed that he had Parkinson's disease and said he was retiring to spend more time with his family.

As well as starring in the 'Back To The Future' series of movies, Fox has voiced the children's film 'Stuart Little'. He came to fame in the 1980s playing arch-Republican Alex Keaton in the sitcom 'Family Ties'.

It is not the first ad that Kerry has made promoting his stance on stem cell research. Last week, he appeared in a spot himself making much the same argument -- that research could help treat diseases like Parkinson's and that the US should be leading the way.
