Mellors comes out of retirement to rejoin Blamer at Grey

LONDON - Tim Mellors, the former executive creative director of Grey Worldwide, is to rejoin the agency as president and chief creative officer of Grey Worldwide North America, after being lured out of retirement to rejoin CEO Steve Blamer.

Mellors, aged 57, had been with Grey for five years before quitting as chairman and executive creative director almost two years ago. Blamer left the London office in 2000 to run Grey's New York operation with a brief to turn things around at the network's flagship office, and has long been searching for the ideal creative partner.

Blamer and Mellors being reunited is the result of a lengthy effort on the part of Blamer to lure his former colleague over the pond.

"Over the last several months, as I talked to candidates, I kept asking myself, 'does this person fulfil our criteria as well as Tim' and the answer was always 'no'. I got tired of asking myself that question and so I asked Tim if the time was finally right for him to come to New York. After a few dinners and a couple of breakfasts and many, many telephone conversations between New York and London, Tim said 'yes,' and I got my wish, a little late but I still got it," he said.

Mellors almost as famous for his eclectic career, which has seen him work as a journalist and a game-show host, and his long-gone years of drink and drugs, as he is for creating campaigns for British Airways and Sure deodorant.

During his 30-year plus career in the ad industry, Mellors has worked at agencies including FCB, DDB, Lintas, French Gold Abbott and Saatchi & Saatchi.

Since leaving Grey last year, Mellors has turned his hand to a new career, as a host of the television gameshow 'Double Cross' on the BBC. He also completed a post-graduate qualification as a psychotherapist and painted in his spare time.

Mellors is due to take up his job at Grey in August.
