The WPP-owned agency has also picked up the American brand's $19m Canadian business, as well as retaining the $100m US account.

In the UK and Canada, the account was previously held by ZenithOptimedia and Universal McCann respectively. However, at the start of 2007, Staples decided to consolidate its global planning and buying and kicked off the review.

Representatives from MediaCom's London office flew over to the US to pitch for the UK portion of the account.

In the UK, the Staples business will be housed in MediaCom's retail division, which also manages retail brands including Ikea.

Staples opened its first UK shop in Swansea in 1993. Its retail network now extends across 85 stores and it plans to open five more every year.
