The broadcaster is also poised to launch Skymovies.com, which will join Skynews.com and Skysports.com to complete Sky's web trio. Skymovies.com will carry a database of 40,000 movies with reviews of each and enable customers to buy cinema tickets online.
According to spokesman Adrian Lee, from July 1 the on-air graphics will be "cleaner and more modern", in the first change to the on-screen visuals in more than three years. The redesign is being carried out in-house under the direction of head of movies, Paul Taylor.
A central plank of the relaunch will be the rebadging of each of Sky Movies' three sub-brands - Max (action and comedy), Premier (blockbusters) and Cinema (classic films), under the Sky Movies umbrella.
"With the plethora of channels available now on Sky Digital, we have decided to make these more identifiable with Sky Movies by renaming them Sky Movies Max, Sky Movies Premier and Sky Movies Cinema, said Lee.
Sky Movies launched in 1989 as a single channel but has since grown to comprise 12 digital screens, the UK's only dedicated widescreen channel, and the world's first interactive movie channel, Sky Movies Active. Active offers previews of all the films showing, provides local cinema listings and allows customers to buy cinema tickets and pay for them through their Sky bill.
"Sky Movies can now provide all viewers' movie needs, in and out of home, from the comfort of their armchair, said Lee. "This update reflects that."
