Guardian Media Group Radio has beaten 15 other applicants to the
Yorkshire regional radio licence, the most hotly contested analogue
licence for five years.
GMG will launch its Real Radio format, which combines speech, sport and
popular music, in the Yorkshire region early next year. Real Radio was
first introduced in South Wales last October after GMG won the regional
licence there, and it is also rolling out onto seven local digital radio
platforms in the north of England.
The Yorkshire station will have a potential audience of three million
listeners. GMG managing director John Myers, who launched the Century
radio brand for Border Television, said: "This transforms GMG Radio into
a major radio force."
