The Financial Times has emerged as the biggest winner in the latest
Audit Bureau of Circulations figures, with a 11.76% rise in sales over
the year to October 1998.
Its May-October average figure of 361,699 has closed the gap on The
Guardian’s circulation of 393,491, which declined by 4.46%.
The Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, and News International’s Sunday Times
were the only titles to add readership over the six months to
October.
The Independent experienced the largest loss among daily papers. It had
a 16.26% fall in sales over the year to November 1 1998. Its average
May-October circulation of 222,188 was one-fifth of the top selling
broadsheet, The Telegraph.
Among the tabloids The Star suffered a year-on-year circulation fall of
11.46% to 566,305. The Sun, which experienced a 3.19% drop, sells
3,698,300.
