Being 50 turns life into a Saga

Capital boss David Mansfield had sobering words for the more greying members of his audience: "When you get to 50 a very frightening thing happens on the day of your birthday. You get a letter from Saga . It's terrifying. I took the letter into the office, gave it to my PA and said: ‘Get me off this database.'

Keeping eye on the ‘children'

Starcom's Jim Marshall did well to settle the score during the question time session after mischief- makers tried to put him off.

He told the audience: "I'm sitting here looking at Derek Morris and Graham Duff giggling like schoolboys in the front row. The best thing about this job is knowing there are people quite senior, but still just as childish.

University blag plus royal shag

Award for top blagger goes to one of the agency delegates.

Bitch heard that he decided to take advantage of the local student scene at nearby St Andrews and tried to talk his way into the university's union pub armed only with a Manning Gottlieb OMD business card – whether it was actually his card remains a mystery.

Another attendee from an agency made clear where her priorities lie when she casually dropped into a lunchtime conversation: "I'm off into town to try and shag Prince William."

Stevie slumber just four-some

The "I Need My Beauty Sleep Award" goes to Stevie Spring (pictured), who prepared for her role as human 48-sheet in the battle of the mediums by getting an early night before her presentation – or so it seemed.

Spring was heard joking to one group at the dinner on Thursday night: "I was in bed by 12.15am – and got back tomy room at four."

Lamppost right for night owls

Best salesmanship of the conference was done by Street Broadcast.

Bitch witnessed OMD boss Steve Williams being frogmarched out of the bar by a saleswoman in the middle of the night and forced to look at the specially installed lamppost outside.

The company then managed to sell its lamppost to the hotel venue.

Duff owns up

ITV's Graham Duff got off to a flying start in his attempt to win Battle of the Mediums. After showing a great ad to the audience, he confided: "I first saw that Lynx ad in the cinema to be brutally honest."

Bugs in the night

By the wee hours of the morning on Friday, the after-dinner networking had escalated to the point where some of the delegates were stealing golf buggies parked out front of the hotel for joy rides, forcing the hotel staff to confiscate the keys at one point.

One of the buggy guardians told Bitch : "It's not exactly an unusual occurrence at these sort of events."
