Media agencies line up for £32m Santander

LONDON - Santander, the Spanish banking group, has called a review of its £32 million UK media planning and buying business following its recent acquisition of Alliance & Leicester and the savings arm of Bradford & Bingley.

The review includes media for the two brands, plus Abbey. Carat, the incumbent on Abbey and Alliance & Leicester, has been invited to repitch as part of a process that is expected to conclude by the end of the year.

Carat has held the £18 million Abbey business since November 2005 and retained the business following a review last year. It won the £14 million Alliance & Leicester business in 2006, ahead of Santander’s £1.3 billion acquisition of A&L this July.

Media for the Bradford & Bingley savings business, which was bought last month, is handled by MediaCom North.

Abbey’s creative account, handled by WCRS, is unaffected by the review.

Keith Moor, the director of brand and communications at Abbey, said: With the acquisition of A&L and B&B, we need to consider our media requirements across three businesses.

"In a tough economic environment, we are committed to ensuring we are getting real value from all our agencies.
