Media ABCs: Business titles pursue 'invest-to-grow' strategy

Global concerns from the credit crunch to climate change have helped the news and current-affairs market experience stable growth in the first half of the year.

The Economist posted a small period-on-period increase in UK circulation from 181,374 to 182,539. The 0.6% increase is not as buoyant as the 6.7% rise it posted at the last ABCs, but The Economist Group has vowed to continue to invest in marketing its titles despite the economic downturn.

Globally, the group claims year-on-year growth of 6.1% across its countries of distribution. Yvonne Ossman, UK publisher of The Economist, attributed the confident results to continuing investment in circulation and marketing, and vowed the title would retain this bullish approach.

Elsewhere, Dennis Publishing's The Week showed a period-on-period increase of 3.4% to 150,099, while Press Holding Media's The Spectator rose 1.7% to 76,952.

Time Warner's Time magazine was up 0.5% in the UK period-on-period, while its EMEA edition was flat at 335,382.
