In his new role, Hutchison will have responsibility for the agency’s communications planning, activation and investment teams, as well as the interactions between those services.

He will also look at MEC’s relationships with media owners and third parties, focusing on developing more innovative and effective campaigns by involving them earlier in the creation of owned, earned and paid media.

MEC has not had a chief operating officer since promoting Jason Dormieux to joint chief executive, alongside Stuart Bowden, in February 2014. Hutchison will report to Dormieux and oversee accounts such as Morrisons and B&Q. Sarah Hennessy, the managing director who reports to Bowden, looks after EE and Michelin.

After joining MEC as a managing partner and head of communications planning in 2010, Hutchison was promoted to deputy managing director in 2014. He was previously a managing partner at Vizeum for nearly four years and has also worked at DLKW Lowe.

Dormieux said: "In Paul, we have someone who has the talent and experience to ensure that we take full advantage of the exciting ways in which our market is developing for the benefit of our clients."
