The station already broadcasts in London on 1035AM (medium wave), as well as to a worldwide audience via the internet.
Mean Fiddler is headed by Vince Power, who acquired the licence for MeanCountry last year with the aim of bringing the station to the widest possible audience.
To show its support for country music, Mean Fiddler will run a series of country music gigs at one of the live music venues it owns, the Jazz Cafe in London. The company launched the series with the help of 1980s solo star Paul Young, famous for hits such as 'Wherever I Lay My Hat", and the band Los Pacaminos.
However, while country music may not enjoy the same profile here as in its home territory of the southern US, MeanCountry takes a broader definition to the genre. Its playlist includes songs drawn from all areas of country and country-influenced music with core artists including Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Dolly Parton, Roy Orbison, Kris Kristofferson, Kenny Rogers, REM, Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, Dwight Yokham, Dixie Chicks, Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, The Everley Brothers, Neil Young, Glen Campbell and Johnny Cash.
All of the station's daytime shows (7am-7pm) also feature contemporary country classics released between 1970-2002 and vintage country classics released between 1930-1970. Artists featued include Faron Young, Kathy Mattea, Ry Cooder, Joe Ely, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kim Richey and Richard Thompson.
