McDonald’s has chosen to back the Olympics despite recent scandal

associated with the movement, by extending its sponsorship of the

Olympic Games until 2004.

The deal, thought to be worth around dollars 50m (pounds 33m), will

cover sponsorship of the 2002 Winter Games at Salt Lake City and the

2004 Summer Games in Athens.

McDonald’s decision was vital for the International Olympic Committee,

following last year’s scandal over officials allegedly accepting gifts

to aid Salt Lake City’s bid.

McDonald’s joins seven other companies in the IOC’s Top V sponsor

programme: Coca-Cola, Eastman Kodak, John Hancock Financial Services,

Visa International, Sema Group, Time/Sports Illustrated and Xerox.

The IOC expects to announce three further sponsors to generate dollars

600m (pounds 400m) in funds between 2002 and 2004.
