McDonald's gives design overhaul to flagship outlet

McDonald's has revamped its Oxford Circus store in London, adding features including an in-store TV channel, console gaming and internet access as part of its efforts to entice UK consumers back into its restaurants.

The redesign, completed this week, comes as part of an ongoing refurbishment of the fast-food retailer's UK restaurants. Elements of the Oxford Street concept store will eventually be rolled out to the rest of its 1225 outlets.

The new look, by architect and design agency SSH, features redesigned tables, chairs and counters, as well as graphics, signage and fascia.

The three-floor building now offers three distinct areas catering to different user groups. The ground floor is designed to appeal to customers wanting quick, efficient service, while the basement provides a diner-style environment, aimed at families on longer visits.

The first floor caters to young people, particularly teenagers, and is the biggest departure from previous restaurants, hosting internet and PlayStation 2 gaming units.

The Oxford Street store will be the first to show the in-store TV channel, which features pop videos, news and McDonald's own media.
