McDonald's to flag food nutrition levels on-pack

LONDON - McDonald's is to display nutritional information on its products, in what will be seen as its boldest step yet to reassure customers of the quality of its food.

The company is understood to be assessing a range of pack designs for information panels, which will be rolled out across its range from next year. Formats under consideration include cartoons and picture icons to flag nutritional content.

According to insiders, one labelling option shows fat- and salt-content levels as highly visible bar charts.

The fast-food giant views the promotion of food quality and its nutritional information as key weapons in its fight against the anti-obesity lobby.

A spokeswoman for the company confirmed that it was looking at a number of concepts and was evaluating customer feedback.

The move is part of McDonald's' new "open" strategy and is intended to make nutritional information readily available to consumers, who currently have to go online or look at the back of tray liners for detailed information.

McDonald's first provided nutritional information to customers 21 years ago, but it has come under fire in the ongoing obesity debate.
