Maxim loses editor after one year

LONDON - The editor of Dennis Publishing's Maxim, Derek Harbinson, has stepped down after one year at the title, as the monthly lad's mag undergoes a review of its content and direction.

Harbinson, who is a former editor of IPC Media's Loaded and deputy editor of Nuts, took over at Maxim from Greg Gutfeld.

The magazine suffered a 18.1% six-month on six-month drop in circulation to 107,687 in the latest ABC figures, making it one of the worst performers in the shrinking men's print sector. The magazine is down 26.3% year on year.

Gutfeld left in March 2006 after circulation fell 16.2% over six-months to 190,438. Having initially made the magazine more popular, he left after being told his two-year contract would not be renewed.

Dennis said it would be aiming to quickly hire a successor to Harbinson.

Bruce Sandell, managing director of Dennis' consumer division, said Maxim's print edition will be undergoing a major review of its current direction and content in the next six months as part of an effort to restore the title's popularity among young men.

Sandell said: "Over the next six months the print product will be developed, the current direction and content of the magazine will be evaluated. The dynamics of our business are constantly changing and to stay ahead of our competitors we will continue to evolve."
