Maxim in film deal with Lord of the Rings studio

NEW YORK - Men's lifestyle magazine Maxim, best known for semi naked women on its covers, has hooked up with film studio New Line Cinema in a deal that could see Maxim articles turned into plots for new films, under the banner "Maxim Presents".

New Line is behind films such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Austin Powers series while Maxim, published by Dennis Publishing in 16 countries, has seen its circulation grow to 2.5m since it launched in the US in 1997.

The two companies claim that the deal is the first between a studio and a major consumer magazine on this wide a scale since the 1970s. Financial details were not disclosed, but according to reports, the deal will be a mix of fees, rights and revenues.

The deal was brokered by William Morris Consulting, and signed by Stephen Colvin, president of Dennis Publishing US and Christopher Godsick, vice-president of production for New Line.

Toby Emmerich, president of production for New Line, said: "Maxim is the fastest-growing men's magazine in America because it speaks to its audience. It doesn't take a big leap to get how the Maxim brand and sensibility could be used as a great starting point to develop some compelling films."

Godsick said: "Maxim is not only a hot brand to readers all over the world but it's a magnet to talent. Our deal with Maxim is unique and we're excited about collaborating with them."

New Line is part of AOL Time Warner, which has its own stable of magazines, including Loaded, the first lad's magazine.
