Clifford has known Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale for several years and now has an informal agreement with the club, which also has an in-house PR team. Clifford described his brief as building bridges between the club and the national and international media.
Last year, the club was at the centre of much negative press coverage as two of its stars, Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate, were brought to court for a racist attack on a student. The case around Bowyer still rumbles on, after a transfer deal to Liverpool fell through.
"There have been some problems, no one can deny that," Clifford said. "But there have also been misunderstandings."
The club has now lured Terry Venables back to the Premiership to manage the team. It has also signed Liverpool midfielder Nick Barmby.
Clifford denied that being a life-long Fulham fan would be a problem in advising his latest client. "I represented Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole at the same time, and there was no conflict of interest," he said.
Other clients of Max Clifford Associates have included Mohamed Al Fayed, owner of Harrods and Fulham FC, and Pop Idol's bad guy, Simon Cowell.
