Maverick publisher cries foul at Virgin mag plans

Virgin's plan to launch an iPad magazine called Maverick have drawn the wrath of an independent publisher who has been publishing a music magazine by the same name for the past eight years.

Marketing revealed last week that with the launch of iPad title Maverick in October this year to be led by Holly Branson, daughter of Richard Branson.

However, a title called Maverick already exists, published by independent company AAG Publishing, which is owned by editor Alan Cackett.

Cackett's Maverick is a 10,000 circulation music title featuring a blend of country, folk, bluegrass and roots music and is sold in outlets including WH Smiths, HMV and Tesco. It is also available online at .

Cackett said: "I am amazed to discover that Virgin didn’t check to see if there was another magazine out there called Maverick.

"There is no way you can have two magazines in a similar sector with the same name."

Cackett, who is waiting for Virgin to respond to his enquries, admitted he had not trademarked the title.

Virgin was unavailable for comment.
