Each member of Matalan's database has paid a one-off 拢1 fee, which allows them to shop at the stores.
The company's chief executive Paul Mason believes Matalan would be better off using this information to provide targeted promotions to customers, rather than relying on in-store marketing and leaflets.
News of the plans came as the retailer announced a 9% increase in pre-tax profits to 拢53.6m for the first half of the year. It also said it plans to double its trading space in London, as part of a five-year plan to double its number of UK outlets to 155.
