10 years ago: Murdoch Magazines fires the first shot in the battle

between TV listings titles by confirming that it plans to launch a

magazine called TV Guide in March; Barclays becomes the first bank to

abolish transaction charges on banking services for all of its current

account personal customers; Butlins Holidays launches its first joint

sales promotion, in association with Woolworths.



5 years ago: Media group CIA acquires the London Media Group, taking its

total number of UK network shops to 12; media magnate Tony O’Reilly, the

owner of Irish Independent Newspapers is revealed to be battling with

Mirror Group Newspapers for ownership of The Independent; the European

Parliament votes to introduce legislation to prevent European media

companies controlling too many media outlets.
